The message of the Hony. Secretary of ITPSL

Plnr. Priyani Nawarathne

I am honoured to write this message to the special Newsletter published at the launching ceremony of the 40th Anniversary of the Institute of Town Planners Sri Lanka. At this special event, I would like to recall the contribution of the pioneer members who founded the Institute and paved the way to lead it to where it stands today. I also express my sincere gratitude to all the past presidents, council members, and past members whose commitment reinforced the foundation of the Institute.

Throughout the four decades of its existence, the Institute and its members have been making a significant contribution to developing the town planning profession in Sri Lanka through several initiatives. Maintaining standards of professional practice by application of Institute’s rules, regulations, and code of practice; producing qualified Professional Town Planners through professional practice (part III) examination and strict eligibility criteria; compulsory continuous professional development programs; consultation with the general public, and related stakeholders of both private and public sector when required; collaboration with national and international institutions are some of such initiatives.

I believe that the 40th Anniversary celebration of the Institute is a landmark event for the members. It would be a vital platform for celebrating success stories of four decades of a long journey and understanding the lessons learnt, challenges faced, and hurdles met to withstand. We should further strengthen our confidence and be equipped with new technologies in every way to shape the future of our cities while securing the excellence of our profession to be a key partner of the country’s development efforts. The theme of the anniversary – ‘Facing the Future with Confidence’, illustrates our vision to be involved in the development processes of our country to build a strong nation.
